The call you missed is the job you lost
Most missed calls never get a callback, and the caller has already dialled the next name. What a text-back that fires in seconds actually changes.
August 21, 2026
You are under a sink, on a roof, halfway through a cut. The phone rings. You cannot answer it, so it rings out, and you tell yourself you will call back tonight.
Most owners do not, and not because they do not care. The day eats the list. Quo, the phone company formerly called OpenPhone, looked at 16.7 million missed calls to its small-business customers over three months and found that 69 percent never got a callback within 48 hours. Only 31 percent were called back at all.
The caller does not know you were busy. They know nobody picked up. Invoca’s 2026 benchmark of more than 70 million calls to home services businesses found that only 52 percent of calls reach a live person. The other 48 percent hear ringing, then voicemail, and most of them do not leave a message. They go back to the search results and dial the next name.
Speed is the whole game
The classic study on this, published in Harvard Business Review, audited 2,241 US companies and found the average first response to a new web lead took 42 hours. Firms that responded within five minutes were about 21 times more likely to qualify the lead than firms that waited even half an hour. The number is old, and it is still the standard citation, because nothing since has contradicted it.
What a text-back actually does
You do not have to answer every call to stop losing every missed one. The fix is a text that fires the second you cannot pick up.
- The call comes in and you cannot get to it.
- Within seconds a text goes out from your own number: sorry we missed you, what is going on?
- The caller replies by text on their own time. The conversation captures the address, the problem and a preferred time, and you follow up when your hands are free. The lead is not cold by the time you get to it.
The caller notices the fast reply, not the plumbing behind it.
Where this fits
This is the product we call Missed-Call Text-Back. It runs on the number you already advertise, it has hard rules in writing about what it may never quote, promise or book, and every conversation is logged so you can read what was said in your name over coffee the next morning. The Daily Operating Brief puts that morning digest next to yesterday’s calls, leads and jobs.
